Oblong, adult leaves are connected to spongy, aerenchyma tissue that aids in keeping large leaves afloat. This tissue also prevents leaves from folding at the midrib, therefore floating leaves will always lie flat on the water’s surface.
Mature plants can produce large quantities of sporocarps among the submersed leaves. Spherical sporocarps are arranged in compact bundles. Sporocarp sacs contain numerous sporangia which hold the microscopic spores.
